A1: Word processing

Proportion of term grade 5%, due Friday Jan 29 at 4 PM.

For this assignment you must start with the raw data in three pre-created MS-Word documents [Calgary.docx] [Dubai.docx] [World travels.docx]. The latter is largely an empty document but it's included some extra whitespace so you can insert the other two documents as sub-documents (so the "World travels" document is a master document) and there's space for a table of contents and a table of figures to be created (more on these details later). For you reference I have also included a PDF document that shows roughly what the final master document should look like [Acrobat version of the final master document]

Everyone starts this assignment with a grade point of zero. As you implement the features listed below your grade for this assignment will increase by the amount specified in the brackets. To receive credit features must be invoked using Word's built in functionality and not manually typed in by the student. For example if a student typed in a figure caption rather than using Word's figure captioning ability then no marks would be awarded.

  1. (Inside the 'Calgary' document): Under the heading "Spruce Meadows"  immediately after the text "The festival of lights" insert a footnote that contains the web address of the Spruce Meadows website. (0.3 grade points)
  1. (Inside the 'Calgary' document): Use Word's insert citation feature to cite the text "One dream. Four Jamaicans. Twenty below zero."
        b) Type of source: Film (0.1 grade point)
        c) Title: Cool Runnings (0.1 grade point)
        d) Director: Turteltaub, Jon (0.1 grade point)
        e) Year: 1993 (0.1 grade point)
  1. (Inside the 'Calgary' document): Create a bibliography for this new source at the end of the document (0.3 grade points)
  1. Finally make the changes to the text from #2 above
        a) Create a new 'style' of text in Word called "Movie taglines" that will be formatted as follows. Font type: 'Arial black'  Font size 12 (0.3 grade points)
        b) Apply this style to the text  "One dream. Four Jamaicans. Twenty below zero." (0.2 grade point)
  1. Use the (image) captioning of Word to label all the images in each of Calgary (0.4 grade points) and Dubai documents (0.6 grade points).
  1. Insert a new image (your choice) in the 'Calgary' document between the 1st and 2nd image ("Split rock" and "Traffic Artwork"). Use the image captioning feature of Word to caption the new image. To get credit for this feature make sure that all your other image captions and any applicable references to the images are correctly updated  (0.3 grade points).
  1. Insert the "Calgary.docx" and "Dubai.docx"  documents as sub-documents of the master "World travels.docx" document. Do not copy the contents of the the two documents into the master document or you won't get credit. (0.6 grade points)
  1. (Inside the "World travels" document): Use Word's ability to automatically generate a table of contents at the start of the document, to get credit for this feature make sure you "update" the values so they are correct (if needed).  (0.3 grade points).
  1. (Inside the "World travels" document): Use Word's ability to automatically generate a table of Figures at the start of the document, to get credit for this feature make sure you "update" the values so they are correct (if needed). (0.3 grade points)

Submitting your work:

  1. The Word documents must be electronically submitted according to the assignment submission requirements using D2L. Make sure that you include the final versions of ALL THREE DOCUMENTS in D2L. If you exclude one or more documents then you will not be awarded any marks for the missing features.

D2L configuration for this course

  • You can (and really should) submit work as many times as you wish before the due date
  • Only your latest submission (what you submitted previously will be overwritten by your latest submission)
  • You can only submit one file per assignment. If you wish to submit multiple files then use 'zip' to contain all the documents in one document: [How to use zip in Windows 7] Do not use other compression utilities otherwise your submission may not be marked.
  1. You are not allowed to work in groups for this class. Copying the work of another student will be regarded as academic misconduct (cheating).  For additional details about what is and is not okay for this class please refer to the [notes on misconduct for this course].

Points to keep in mind:

  1. Due time: All assignments are due at 4 PM on the due dates listed on the course web page.  Late assignments or components of assignments will not be accepted for marking without approval for an extension beforehand. What you have submitted in D2L as of the due date is what will be marked.
  2. Extensions may be granted for reasonable cases by the course instructor with the receipt of the appropriate documentation (e.g., a doctor's note). Typical examples of reasonable cases for an extension include: illness or a death in the family. Cases where extensions will not be granted include situations that are typical of student life: having multiple due dates, work commitments etc. Tutorial instructors (TA's) will not be able to provide extension on their own and must receive permission from the course instructor first. (Note: Forgetting to hand your assignment or a component of your assignment in does not constitute a sufficient reason for handing your assignment late).
  3. Method of submission: You are to submit your assignment using D2L [help link]. Make sure that you [check the contents of your submitted files] (e.g., is the file okay or was it corrupted, is it the correct version etc.). It's your responsibility to do this! (Make sure that your submit your assignment with enough time before it comes due for you to do a check).
  4. Collaboration: Assignments must reflect individual work, group work is not allowed in this class nor can you copy the work of others. To avoid problems students should not see each others assignment solution.
  5. Execution: programs must work on the machines in the 203 computer lab. It's up to you to test and check that this is the case. Non-functional submissions will receive only partial credit (if any at all).
