Token Length vs Ring Length
How many bits fit on a ring?
- 1000 meter ring, propagation is 200m/ _sec
- 1mb/ s rate, 1mb/ s = 1 bit per 10**-6 seconds
- time 'round the ringí = 1000m/200m/_sec = 5*10**-6 seconds
- => therefore ring is 5 bits long
Each station also introduces >= a one bit delay, eg, if (say) 6 stations, then 11 bits in the ring
if token is larger, or if station goes off line, then additional bit delays must be introduced via shift registers
