failure, eg B fails given logical ring A-B-C-D
- A holds the token, A passes token,
- A listens for B to send frame or pass token
- if no activity from B, pass token again
- if still no activity, A transmits "who follows B" ?message, C responds with "Set Successor as C", A sets its neighbor to C, and passes it the token, B is out of the loop
