NRZ: Non Return to Zero

• voltage level constant during bit interval

  i.e. does not return to "0" volts during interval
  

• Polar NRZ (least sensitivity to noise)

  1: + A volts
  
  0: - A volts

• Unipolar RZ

  1: +A for 1st half, 0 for 2nd half of bit interval
  
  0: 0

• Problems with NRZ:

  difficult to recover clock frequency from signal, Polar NRZ also has DC component
