start bit: beginning of block signaled by bit sent with value 0; block sent (of known length); stop bit: binary value of 1, sent for specific duration (1-2x length of ordinary bit)
If steady stream of characters sent, character interval equals stop bits + start bit
in idle state, looks for next 1 to 0 transition
framing error: if drift is too great, read wrong bits as stop bits
