Impulse Noise Example

• During a file transfer of an ascii document, lightning produces a 1/2 second impulse noise on a 2400 bps line. How many characters lost?

  assume 8 bits/ascii character
  
  bits lost = 2400 bps * .5 seconds = 1200 bits
  number of characters lost = 1200 bits/8 bits per character = 150 characters (~1/3 of a page)
  on a voice channel, youíd hear a click!
