Characteristics of Signals:

• periodic signals

  repeat themselves
  

• amplitude:

  instantaneous value of a signal (ex. measured in volts for electrical systems)
  

• frequency:

  repetitions/second of a period
  
  is = 1/ (time for one period)
  measured in Hertz (Hz) or cycles per second

• phase

  relative position in time within a single period eg
  
  two waves out of phase but otherwise identical signals
