University of Calgary Chilled Water Supply Interruption.

Good day Team Science,

We have learned more information regarding the chilled water line repair.

The planned shut down, investigation and potential repair is now scheduled for June 9th, 10th, and 11th. They have chosen a weekend, in order to mitigate load on the system and protect end users from heat in the buildings, as air handling goes offline. Our 3rd party contractors will be on site to observe and react should there be any issues. As well, we will have equipment on standby should equipment or an area be identified (not previously identified) that is critical to operation or research. There is a 3-day schedule just in case there is a need for an immediate repair, or the repair to be conducted in that time frame, rather than defer further. There is still always a possibility of a sudden line failure which is why our partners continue to work as quickly as possible to ensure redundancies are in place.

Convocation and Jack Simpson has been supplied with double redundancies as a precaution should there be a sudden loss in the chilled water line prior to investigation and repair.

Our 3rd party vendors are working on domestic water transfer in buildings ES and MS. These  are currently underway and in the hands of engineering and contractors, being supported by our infrastructure team.

It should be noted that bypasses will not impact air handling units in buildings, other than animal handling. The University is working on policies and suggestions regarding building occupancy and plan to release it soon.

We also received confirmation that our partners in the URC will be unaffected by this interruption as they run on a different source.

Thank you again for your patience as we navigate this constantly evolving situation.

Office of the Vice-President (Services)

Dear campus community,

There is a suspected leak in a water line on university property near 16th Avenue and Shaganappi Trail N.W.

This water line supplies water from the Bow River to the Central Heating and Cooling Plant and is responsible for the cooling of most buildings on main campus. It also cools specialized equipment such as low-temperature freezers, walk-in coolers, IT data centres, and other laboratory and research and teaching equipment.

Planned work to investigate this suspected leak is targeted to take place on Friday, June 9, 2023. To allow for this, the affected water pipe will be temporarily shut off for that day. Work could continue into the weekend only if necessary. We have selected this date as Fridays are typically a quieter day on campus and this date is after the conclusion of convocation ceremonies.

While the chilled water line is being worked on, most of our buildings on main campus will no longer receive cooling. Buildings will remain open. Water will continue to be available in bathrooms, kitchens, lab sinks and drinking fountains.

What should I do?

Further communications will be sent to researchers, teaching instructors and managers on how to support their teams at this time. Students will receive updates from their teaching instructors if there is any impact to their studies.

Special steps are being taken to address areas of the campus that have specialized or unique cooling requirements, such as our data centres, certain research facilities and specialized research support spaces.

As this situation evolves, we will post further updates on the cooling outage on our website. We will also continue to communicate updates to keep the campus community informed.
