A1: Word processing

Proportion of term grade 5%, due Friday January 20 at 5 PM

For this assignment you must start with the raw data in a pre-created MS-Word document [Travels.docx]. For you reference I have also included a PDF document that shows what the document should look like [Acrobat version of document]. (You shouldn't need a solution for creating the master and sub-documents).

Everyone starts this assignment with a grade point of zero. As you implement the features listed below your grade for this assignment will increase by the total italicized amount specified in the brackets. To receive credit features must be invoked using Word's built in functionality and not manually typed in by the student. For example if a student typed in a figure caption rather than using Word's figure captioning ability then no marks would be awarded.

  1. (Inside the 'Travels' document): Under the heading "Spruce Meadows"  immediately after the text "The festival of lights" insert a Word generated ( footnote that contains the web address of the Spruce Meadows website. (0.3 grade points)
  1. (Inside the 'Travels' document): Use Word's "insert citation" feature to cite the text "One dream. Four Jamaicans. Twenty below zero."  The citation must be immediately after the quoted text (see the top right portion of the beside the description of this feature, the citation part is "Turteltaub, 1993") (0.4 grade points in total)
        b) Type of source: Film (0.1 grade point)
        c) Title: Cool Runnings (0.1 grade point)
        d) Director: Turteltaub, Jon (0.1 grade point)
        e) Year: 1993 (0.1 grade point)
  1. (Inside the 'Travels' document): Using the citation from #2, create a bibliography for this new source at the end of the document (see bottom of the image to the right). (0.3 grade points)
  1. Finally make the changes to the text from #2 above (0.6 grade points in all)
        a) Create a new 'style' of text in Word called "Movie taglines" that will be formatted as follows. Font type: 'Arial black'  Font size 14 (0.4 grade points: 0.2 for font type, 0.2 for font size)
        b) Apply this style to the text and citation for this text "One dream. Four Jamaicans. Twenty below zero." (0.2 grade point)
  1. Use the (image) captioning of Word to label all the images in the document (7 images x 0.1 GPA each = 0.7 grade points)
  1. Insert a new image (your choice) in the 'Travels' document between the 1st and 2nd image ("Split rock" and "Spruce Meadows"), 0.1 grade point. The image should be on it's own page (use the insert "Page break" feature and not by hitting 'enter' multiple times), 0.3 grade points.  Use the image captioning feature of Word to caption the new image, 0.1 grade points. To get credit for this feature make sure that all your other image captions and any applicable references to the images are correctly updated. (0.5 grade points in total)
  1. (Inside the 'Travels' document): Use Word's ability to automatically generate a table of contents at the start of the document, to get credit for this feature make sure you "update" any previous caption values so they are correct (if needed).  (0.2 grade points).
  1.  To ensure you get credit for this feature you MUST use the specified names with some unique text in each sub-document and employ the master document feature of Word (JT's resource file describing master documents work): Create a new document called "master" which contains two sub-documents called "sub-document1" and "sub-document2". To make it easier to for your marker to determine you have done this successfully sub-document1 must contain some distinctive text "Ai caramba! - Bart Simpson from The Simpsons"  and sub-document2 must contain some distinctive text "Aye, sir. The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain. - Scotty from Star Trek III". If you wish, you can even copy and paste the required text from the assignment description right into the appropriate document. JT's tip: you may find it easier to see what's happening and what text goes into what document if you first create the sub-documents and then 'insert' (view->outline->show document->insert) the sub-documents into the master document. However you will still get credit if you complete the assignment by 'creating' (view->outline->show document->create) the sub-documents via the master the document.  You won't get any credit for this feature however if you just create one document. (1.0 grade point )

Points to keep in mind:

  1. The Word documents must be electronically submitted according using D2L. Make sure that you include the final versions of ALL FOUR DOCUMENTS (Travels, master, sub-document1, sub-document2), in D2L. If you exclude one or more documents then you will not be awarded any marks for the missing features.
  2. Due time: All assignments are due at 5 PM on the due dates listed on the course web page.  Late assignments or components of assignments will not be accepted for marking without approval for an extension beforehand. The latest versions of the files that you have submitted in D2L as of the due date is what will be marked.
  3. Extensions may be granted for reasonable cases by the course instructor with the receipt of the appropriate documentation (e.g., a doctor's note). Typical examples of reasonable cases for an extension include: illness or a death in the family. Cases where extensions will not be granted include situations that are typical of student life: having multiple due dates, work commitments etc. Tutorial instructors (TA's) will not be able to provide extension on their own and must receive permission from the course instructor first. (Note: Forgetting to hand your assignment or a component of your assignment in does not constitute a sufficient reason for handing your assignment late).
  4. Method of submission: You are to submit your assignment using D2L [help link]. Make sure that you [check the contents of your submitted files] (e.g., is the file okay or was it corrupted, is it the correct version etc.). It's your responsibility to do this! (Make sure that your submit your assignment with enough time before it comes due for you to do a check).
  5. Collaboration: Assignments must reflect individual work, group work is not allowed in this class nor can you copy the work of others. To avoid problems students should not see each others assignment solution.
  6. Execution: documents and programs must work on the machines in the 203 computer lab. It's up to you to test and check that this is the case. Non-functional submissions will receive only partial credit (if any at all).
