TopHat will be used in a number of ways for this course: 1) Graded quiz questions that are available offline (you can view them outside of lecture). You can access these questions through the following web link: [Offline questions] 2) Quiz questions that you will receive only in lecture which can be accessed through the following web link [In class questions]. The reason why there are two separate web addresses is the first is common among all lectures, the second is of course specific to only my lecture (because the questions are presented in class).
How to answer TopHat questions:
To view the questions you need a web browser (computer or smart phone). If you use Internet Explorer (sometime FireFox needs it as well) you will have to install the Chrome plug-in (going to the above web link will automatically display a prompt that asks if you want to do the install, answer 'yes'). You can of course answer the questions through the browser. Alternatively (for the in class questions- #2 above) I can display the questions on the screen and you can use a regular ('non-smart') cell phone to text answers to multiple choice questions. You will text your answer to (647) 931-6504. The content of the message is the 4 digit question code followed by your answer. You will see the 4 digit question code when the question is on the screen.
Creating an account:
Although you can access the material anonymously (useful if there are surveys where you don't want to be identified) then you can create an anonymous account by clicking at the 'anonymous account' near the bottom of the course web page for TopHat. For the graded components we will obviously have to be able to identify you in order to match the answer to a grade. Important: you obviously won't get graded for answering questions anonymously because we won't know who you are so make sure you have an account.
New!!! If you register (and don't just stay anonymous) you can use SMS/text
messaging to send in your answers. When you register for a paid account they ask
you for a cell phone number. That means that an answers coming from this number
will be associated with this account and you can receive credit for your
answers. This means that you can use a cell phone only (even with a
regular/non-smart phone) connection and not wi-fi to answer the TopHat
questions.
