Access to computers and help

A lab of Windows-XP computers are available for your use in ES650-656 for your use during the term.  These labs are used for scheduled 203 tutorials as well as drop access for students to work on their assignments (check the room schedule for when tutorials are being held in the room).  Also there will be Teaching Assistant working in these rooms that may be able to answer your questions (although this person won't help you do your assignment).  You can also work at home if you have a Windows-XP computer if you have the necessary software installed (MS-Office and TAIT - the latter should be available with your course text book).

Collaboration

Students are encouraged to discuss the assignments (as well as the theoretical concepts laid out in the course outline).  However all work that is handed in for grading must be the original work of the student.  Any student found copying another student's work or another source will be reported to the Associate Head who may enforce penalties such as failing the course or even expulsion from the university.  Also students who provide their work to another student may also be reported to the Associate Head.  (see Plagarism/Cheating/Other Academic Misconduct in the university calendar for further details).

Course evaluation

     Component Weight
     Assignments 40%
     Midterm I 25%
     Midterm II 25%
     Final exam 10%

Example calculation for the assignment component

  Letter grade GPA Weighted value = GPA * Weight
Assignment 1 A 4 4 * 10% = 0.4
Assignment 2 A 4 4 * 10% = 0.4
Assignment 3 A- 3.7 3.7 * 10%= 0.37
Assignment 4 A 4 4 * 10% = 0.4
Assignment subtotal = 0.4 + 0.4 + 0.37 + 0.4 = 1.57

Example calculation for the exam component

Letter grade GPA Weighted value = GPA * Weight
Midterm I A- 3.7 3.7 * 25% = 0.925
Midterm II A- 3.7 3.7 * 25% = 0.925
Final A+ 4.3 4.3 * 10% = 0.43
Exam subtotal = 0.925 + 0.925 + 0.33 = 2.18

Example calculation for the overall letter grade

Assignment subtotal   1.57
Exam subtotal +2.18
Final letter grade   3.75 (Term letter = "A-")

GPA cutoffs for determining the overall term grade:

Letter  GPA range
A+ 4.3 <= overall GPA >= 4.15
A 4.15 > overall GPA >= 3.85
A- 3.85 > overall GPA >= 3.5
B+ 3.5 > overall GPA >= 3.15
B 3.15 > overall GPA >= 2.85
B- 2.85 > overall GPA >= 2.5
C+ 2.5 > overall GPA >= 2.15
C 2.15 > overall GPA >= 1.85
C- 1.85 > overall GPA >= 1.5
D+ 1.5 > overall GPA >= 1.15
D 1.15 > overall GPA >= 0.75
F 0.75 < overall GPA
