Here's what I have as a combination of what was described to me by Katrin and what's listed on the course web site for how your term grade will be calculated:
| Component | Weight | |
| Midterm exam | 20% | |
| Final exam | 10% | |
| Assignments | 50% | |
| Assignment 1 | 5% | |
| Assignment 2 | 5% | |
| Assignment 3 | 10% | |
| Assignment 4 | 10% | |
| Assignment 5 | 10% | |
| Assignment 6 (JT: This was converted from a 'regular' to a bonus assignment) | 10% | |
| Bonus Assignment | 4% | |
| Other additional assignment work Due Dec 9 | 20% | |
| Worksheet 2% each (max of 2) | 4% | |
| Demo: may be done for only one assignment | 3% | |
| Expo: may be done for only one assignment | 3% | |
| Reading response: 3% each (max of 2) | 6% | |
| CIQ: 2% each (max of 2) | 4% | |
If any of you were told by Katrin that you have some sort of exception to the above marking scheme then I need to know about all these cases now because it means that I will have to draft up a special way of determining what your final term mark will be. Send me this information via email explaining in detail explaining exactly what you were promised e.g., "I was told that I could submit 2 extra CIQ's (in addition to the two that were already required) in place of the two worksheets." The deadline for letting me know about all of these exceptions is Monday December 5 at 3 PM. I need this information early on because there is a lot that I need to do which may include but may not be limited to the following:
Sort through it all by consulting with Katrin
I will probably need to draft up individual spreadsheets because your term grade won't be calculated in the same way that every else's will be
Markers may need to be assigned to mark the work
The grades must be marked an entered in the grade book
Also I need to know if you were given any special conditions about the specifics of your assignment submissions e.g., "I did an outstanding A5 that counts an A5 submission and an A3 submission". Again this information must be communicated to me through email by December 5 at 3 PM.
Other miscellaneous issues:
Because the midterm was already 'curved' i.e., specific percentage ranges were already mapped to particular letter grades, the only way of preserving this curve is to convert all the other components to letter grades as well: The overall term grade will be derived by convert all components to letter grades and multiplying each letter grade by the weight e.g., If you received a B+ on the midterm that was worth 20% of the term mark then the amount that your midterm grade contributes to your term GPA = 3.3 * 0.2 = 0.66. To ensure a higher degree of accuracy the weighted grade points will be calculated to two places of precision.
The effect of bonus marks: Bonus marks will be added to the overall term grade separately from the weighted and may raise your term GPA up by a maximum of one letter 'step' e.g., 'B+' to 'A-'.
All term work that you previously submitted to Katrin must now be sent to me. Web based submissions like the CIQ form will be sent to Katrin so you should email these to me instead (make sure that you include your name in the body of the message as well as including the phrase 'CPSC 233' in the subject line.
Due dates:
All graded work (A1 - A6 and all the components of the 20% 'additional components' category) are due on the last day of classes Friday Dec 9.
The bonus assignment is due Monday Dec 12.
Again make sure that when you send me your assignments that you include all the contact information that I need in order to determine who to assign the grade to (e.g., Your name, the course number, the name of the assignment submission). Include this information in the email and in the body of the document (e.g., if it's an essay include this information at the top of the essay). Any submissions that do not include the proper information will not be graded (i.e., you get a zero for that submission). Since you are now post secondary students you should be responsible enough to include (what should be common sense) information in your submissions and I don't have the time to waste investigating each situation and tracking you down if you don't bother to do this yourself.
