Exam composition (based the near-final version of the exam)
This version of the exam consists of 15 short
answer questions some of which may be broken down into smaller sub-questions.
Approximate break downs by section
- Beyond screen design ~ 45% of the exam
- The Psychology of everyday things ~16 - 19% of the exam
- Graphical screen design ~10 - 14% of the exam
- Usability Heuristics ~16 - 19% of the exam
- Groupware and C.S.C.W. ~ 6 - 8% of the exam.
The percentage break downs are approximate
partly because I may make a few minor adjustments before the last version and
partly because some questions may not fit neatly into one of the above
categories (e.g., a question deals with concepts that span more than one area or
there is a question from the first half of the course). The exam is
cumulative with a heavy focus on material from the second half of the course.
If you have questions that explicitly ask about material from the first half of
the course it will account for a small portion of the exam ~10%.
Approximate break downs by question type
- Knowledge-based question (e.g., List any 6 of Nielsen's
9 usability heuristics) ~10% of the exam
- Questions that test understanding of the material
(e.g., List and describe any 6 of Nielsen's 9 usability heuristics) ~25% of
the exam
- Application questions (e.g., you are given the
description of a sample system and you are to evaluate it according to
Nielsen's usability heuristics) ~ 65% of the exam
