Undergraduate Research Opportunities
These are the opportunities for UCalgary undergraduate students to be involved in research.
The most important point is: the student needs to reach out to a faculty member and ask them to be the research supervisor. Check out what faculty members do for research here. Email them and ask if they are willing to supervise you on a research project. The topic will be either determined by the supervisor or proposed by the student. Your interest should align with your supervisor's research.
Spring/Summer (May to Aug) paid research internships
- You will work with a supervisor on some research topic for 8, 12, or 16 weeks. You need to have made arrangements with a faculty member before applying.
- Research internship application can be found here. [Deadline to apply: February 2, 2024.]
- This one application is for PURE, NSERC USRA (eligible for Canadians only), and Alberta Innovates. This application is competitive so not everyone will get accepted.
- First-year students can apply and have been successful in the past.
Fall or Winter (Sep to Apr) research courses
- You will earn course credits to work with a supervisor on some research topic. You need to have made arrangements with a faculty member before applying.
- CPSC 502 - Research Project (two semesters, Sep to Apr, 6 credits). Application here. [Deadline to apply at the start of September.]
- CPSC 503 - Research Project (one semester, 3 credits). Application here. [Deadline to apply at the start of September and January.]
- A research course is not competitive. Usually if you have a supervisor, you will be allowed to enroll in the course. These are generally for third-year students and above.
- The instructor of CPSC 502 or 503 is not your supervisor. The instructor only grades your research work, but does not get involved in your research.
