Artist Showcase: Kotaro Chiba

Kotaro Chiba is a Japanese born freelance artist, illustrator, and graphics designer based in Niigata, Japan. He has a very unique and pronounced style akin to traditional Japanese art. His works include cover art for novels and music albums. However, most of his works are original individual art pieces that I implore you to explore by yourself. Although he isn't a net artist in the general sense, he is one of my favourite illustrators as did the cover art for one of my favourite music albums.

My Little Ghost

The front cover for My Little Ghost.
Alternate artwork for My Little Ghost. Used in the vinyl release of the album.

My Little Ghost is a musical album by the musician "kidkanevil" with cover artwork beautifully done by Kotaro Chiba. The pieces have a very clean and elegant style sprinkled with urban elements such as poles and pipes. If you hadn't guessed by the fact that this is the first thing I'm showcasing, this is the aforementioned favourite album. [Link]

Let's Read Japanese

Containing Japanese poems, fairy tales, legends, and traditional stories, Let's Read Japanese is a book series published by Oxford Brookes University aimed to help people learn the language while simultaneously educating the reader about the country's rich culture and society. Kotaro Chiba contributed towards the 2017 release of the book with a few of his works. [Link]

Star Wars Visions: Ronin

The front cover art for Star Wars Visions: Ronin.

Star Wars Visions: Ronin is a non-canon spinoff novel by Emma Mieko Cando published by Lucas Film. It sports cover art detailing a character in similar attire to a what one may imagine to be a samurai holding a lightsaber in a fashion that a samurai would. Considering the Japanese influence on the character and novel it only makes sense that Kotaro Chiba was chosen to do the cover art. [Link]
