Evolutionary & Swarm Design

Ryan D. Moniz is working on a distributed multi-agent biological systems simulation and visualization application. The biological simulation being investigated is the lactose operon gene regulatory system. Relevant information regarding knowledge from the disciplines of molecular biology, distributed computing, swarm intelligence and a comprehensive discussion of the application architecture is presented. As agents in the simulation interact with other agents and evolve, observations can be deduced regarding the relationships and interactions that will further the understanding of how biological systems work. The use of distributed systems is to provide high throughput in calculating or working with large data sets. Certain parameters of the simulation can be pre-configured by the end-user. The calculations with regards to the interactions of the agents are distributed to a grid of available computers, and data is continuously sent back to the end-user where it is modeled in the form of a 3D visualization.
